Hi Mike, so nice to meet you, we love your content! And your motivation to encourage others to be less fearful of discovering the world is something we can very much agree on. The world is a scary place if you never leave your house and your comfort zone.

Or as we, the Dutch, love to say; geen strijd, geen glorie. Meaning; no glory without battle!

So, in short, we're Free Birds Magazine, a couple of world travelers whose mission it is to inspire others to become freer and travel more! But we noticed there are many many many skeptics around who don't believe you can actualize your dreams, travel the world, and even earn some decent money while you're enjoying your awesome traveling lifestyle. So, let's convince them!🙂

Q: First things first, why do you do what you do?

I’m a recovering scardey-cat. For most of my life, the last thing I ever wanted was to be in the spotlight. I was scared of just about everything, but most of all I was afraid to speak. Now I’m an adventure travel YouTuber, and BBC Television Host. A career built off a phobia. It’s crazy.
Because I’ve seen both sides. I am obsessed with speaking about fear. My travel style revolves around it. I find the things that scare me most and pry into them. I’ve learned that most scary things in this world are mostly misunderstood. With proper training and a bit of common sense, I learned you can do things you’d never think were possible.

Q: What is your message to people who are very skeptical about living a lifestyle anything other than the ‘standard predictable civilian 9-5 life'?

I set my own limits for the majority of my life. I thought I couldn’t do a lot of things, and I was right. It took some heavy life events to throw these beliefs to the wind, and my limits went with them. Henry Ford “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right”. We should all get this tattooed. But maybe I already have enough tattoos…

Q: For most, it all boils down to money. So, let's talk cold hard cash: how much do you need a year to become a full-time traveler and can you give us an estimation of how much you earn a year?

I’ve been a full-time traveler for 8 years now. What I love about this job is its flexibility. Because you can be a landscape photographer, a videographer, a writer, a vlogger, and whatever else. This pairs with the natural flexibility of travel, you can really spend as much, or as little as you like. Because of this, meandered around many different disciplines over the years. More recently it’s been Youtube and Television. In the past 2 years, I’ve finally found my stride and was able to push 6 figures in 2019, which is good because my entire industry crashed in 2020. I had to pivot, but that’s what I’ve been doing for 8 years.

Q: So, you like to eat the most disgusting food and travel to the craziest locations in the world. Now tell us, what was thé #1 most disgusting food, and what was your #1 craziest location in the world?

Ahaha. Well, I’ve eaten raw sheep liver in Siberia. Cheese covered in Mites in Germany. Maggoty meat in the Philippines. Roasted Marshmallows over the door to hell in Turkmenistan, and riding on a bed of iron ore, train-hopping in Mauritania. It’s been a wild ride, but I’m out to prove that people, places, and food around the world are mostly misunderstood (except the meat, which was pretty gnarly)

Q: That's the crazy stuff, but how about your personal recommendations. What locations are your absolute favorite? What comes to mind first!

It’s been pretty obvious that I often aim to travel to countries that aren’t mentioned often. This doesn’t mean that they are inaccessible though. I often joke that the “tourist unfriendly” countries are the friendliest. And the “tourist-friendly” ones often unfriendly. Stand in the bike lane in Paris to see how friendly France is, but walk down the street in Nouabibou and you’ll have to fend off 100 invites for tea. These faraway places don’t have to be inaccessible though, one of my favorites is easy to travel to in Oman. It’s an extremely safe Arabic country, that is absolutely beautiful, and most people speak English. It’s the perfect place for a road trip too.

Q: And then COVID-19 happened. What was your ‘corona messed up my …“-story? (And how did you adapt in 2020?)

It was 3 am on the Island Socotra, Yemen when I received a scratch on my tent wall saying that my flight next week was canceled and moved to 3 hours from now. I had to make a split decision to stay or go. I had lost my wallet and broken my computer, so that was it. 48h of travel later I was back in Canada to my small hometown in the Atlantic provinces.
If there was a silver lining, the pause was well needed. I had been traveling 11 months of the year and hadn’t had time to do any deep work. During this time I was able to finish up a project I was really excited about called “The War on Fear”. A video course I created after 10 years of doing the things that scared me most. I distilled all the tools and lessons down into 15 videos, and it’s just being released now!

Q: Any last words for our readers? What do they really need to understand from you before clicking away?

I don’t encourage people to follow in my exact footsteps. I’ll be the guinea pig for these experiences. What I’m trying to show the world, is that if you head dead-on towards your fears, with your hands shaking, and your pulse racing, you’ll often find that there is nothing there. Fear is the monster under the bed. You need to have the courage to look.

Free Birds: Thanks Mike, you've shown us that we should also try to conquer our fears while traveling around the world. This message has encouraged us personally to also go beyond our comfort zone! 🙂
