Needless to say, these 7 Wonders of the World are on the bucket list of almost every traveler. Do you have a preference?
1. Chichén Itzá
Legend has it that the city was founded in 987 by Topiltzin Ce Acatl Quetzalcoatl, the legendary king of Tula. However, the city is believed to be older, and hence, was conquered by Topiltzin in 987. It did not become important until late in Mayan history in the 10th century. It is a very important place from a historic point of view.
Eventually, Chichén Itzá became the center of a larger empire than the Maya had known until then. Today, it exists in the west of the Vallodolid peninsula Yucatan, Mexico. And it is one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
2. Cristo Redentor
Cristo Redentor is a large statue of Jesus Christ in the Alto da Boa Vista neighborhood of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The statue is 38 meters high and stands on the 710 meters high mountain Corcovado. Incredibly so, the statue overlooks the city.
Although it seems very new, the idea of it dates back to 1850. A Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss asked Queen Isabel to finance it, but she didn't like the idea at the time. Then, in 1921, the plan was revived. Consequently, it was completed on October 12, 1931. Thereafter, it remains one of the major attractions for people around the world.
3. Colosseum
Needless to say, this infamous architecture has to be on this list. It is an oval amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. And, it is the largest amphitheater ever built! The construction began under the reign of Vespasian in 72 A.D. Although it was completed in 80 A.D, it was consecrated by Titus. The opening games for the inauguration lasted 100 days. And because of its magnificence, it is rewarded by being one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
4. Great Wall of China
I think most of us already know about this one. However, it is better to learn a little. Needless to say, this wall is a defense line built of earth and stones in the north of China. It is more than 21,000 kilometers. Why was it built? Well, it was built to protect the Chinese Empire against enemy nomadic horsemen.
The present wall was largely built during the Ming Dynasty. Therefore, it has earned its place amongst the 7 Wonders of the World.

5. Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a ruined city of the Incas civilization in Peru. Even though Machu Picchu was abandoned in the 16th century, it was rediscovered in 1866. However, much of the Inca civilization can still be found in the ruins.
The construction of the city of Machu Picchu was started around 1440. It was constructed under the direction of Pachacuti. The city was inhabited until the Spanish conquest of the area in 1532.
6. Petra
Petra was the Greek name of the capital of the Nabataeans. It is located in present-day Jordan. However, the Nabataeans themselves called the city Raqmu. The city is located in a valley in the hills and is known for its tombs carved into the rocks. However, virtually all the buildings that once stood are now in ruins.
7. Taj Mahal
With a foundation of love, the Taj Mahal simply shouts royalty and grace. Even though its construction began in 1631, it still remains almost intact. Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal Ruler, created this monument for the love of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. When his wife died, Shah Jahan was inconsolable. He mourned for 2 years. Although he was a king, he often wanted to give everything up and live as a hermit.
Nevertheless, he stayed a ruler and closely watched the construction of this beautiful monument. It is visited by millions of people each year in Agra, India. And it rightfully claims its place in the 7 Wonders of the World.
