What is the best time to visit Japan? We’ve got a handy overview for you!

Japan has four different seasons: you have the beautiful and world-famous cherry blossoms in the spring, the warm summer with lots of festivals, mystical red leaves in the fall, and beautiful snowfall in the chilly winter.

The best time to visit Japan is in early spring (March-early April) and in autumn (late October-November). Nature is at its best and the weather is pleasant for your trip through Japan. But the best travel time for you depends of course on what you want to do and see in Japan. Below are the four seasons featured to make up your mind.

Spring

Spring is probably the most visited time of the year for Japan due to its world-famous Sakura, aka cherry blossom. The pink and white petals ensure that both Japanese and tourists flock to the parks for a picnic. And many pictures will be taken off and with the beautiful Sakura. This means that spring is therefore also a busy time of the year. Spring starts around March and runs until mid-May with temperatures between 13 and 24 degrees Celcius, making it very pleasant to explore the country. We wrote another article with more information about the exact date of the cherry blossom so that you will not miss out on this beautiful natural phenomenon during your trip!

Summer

The summer has high humidity and starts from mid-May to the end of September. The temperatures are between 24 and 32 degrees Celsius and during the summer there is the best chance of a rain shower. This makes summertime may not immediately seem like the best time of year to visit, but a lot is organized in the summer. Summer is the season for cheerful street festivals, outdoor beer gardens, and stunning fireworks displays. But do try to avoid late August and most of September, because they are the typhoon season in Japan. And carries heavy winds and rains!

Autumn

Autumn is the other most popular season to visit Japan next to spring. The land colors itself in beautiful shades of red and orange due to the discoloration of the leaves on the trees. Forests cover nearly 70% of Japan, so you will be able to enjoy this beauty everywhere. October and November are the autumn months, the temperature will be between 15 and 21 degrees Celsius. There is still a chance of rain, but a little less than in the summer months.

Winter

Japan is lesser known for its winters, while they are also beautiful! Due to a large amount of snow in the mountains, there is also an active winter sports area. The legendary powder snow, nicknamed “Japow”, has earned Japan a reputation as the “Swiss Alps of Asia”! How cool if you've been skiing or snowboarding in Japan! The winter months are December, January, and February, and the temperatures are between 5 and 13 degrees Celsius. The winter months attract fewer visitors, so it will be less crowded in tourist spots. If you are not afraid of a little cold and you put on a lot of layers, then winter is also a special time to enjoy Japan!
