Discovering Ubud: Our Month-Long Stay in Bali’s Green Oasis (During Lockdown)

vibrant hub you might know, Ubud was a ghost town. With Bali under strict lockdown for many months due to COVID-19, about 60% of Ubud’s iconic cafes, shops, restaurants, and tourist hotspots were shut down. Despite the challenges, we managed to explore and experience a quieter, more peaceful side of this popular destination.

Ubud in Lockdown: A Different Kind of Adventure

Our journey to Bali wasn’t without its hurdles. We initially entered Indonesia on a business visa in June, but once the Delta variant of COVID-19 hit, even business visas were revoked. This left Ubud far from the usual epicenter of activity. The once bustling streets were eerily empty, and it was difficult to create the typical “Top 10 Things to Do in Ubud” list because so many of the top attractions were closed or deserted.

But even though the usual Ubud attractions were unavailable, nature was still thriving. The lush rice terraces, thick jungles, and serene temples remained as beautiful as ever, and with fewer tourists, we had these breathtaking sites all to ourselves! Imagine standing alone at the Tegallalang Rice Terraces or walking through the sacred grounds of Pura Tirta Empul—an incredibly surreal experience.
