Our 3 absolute favorite waterfalls in south-west Iceland

Iceland is known for its beautiful waterfalls and they have a lot of them! Most are easy to visit by car and are clearly signposted. So we have visited quite a few waterfalls during our road trip through western Iceland.

Below you can read our top 3 waterfalls in south-west Iceland (that are visitable from the Route 1 highway)

Waterfall #3: Gullfoss

Gullfoss is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall is part of the Golden Circle and therefore crowded. It is a very wide waterfall and it is located on the Hvítá (White River). The entire waterfall is about 32 meters deep and provides an impressive view (and thundering sound!). When you visit the waterfall you will immediately notice a large amount of spray water, so bring a rain suit, especially when there is a lot of wind! Due to the spray water, you can often see rainbows at this waterfall!

Waterfall #2: Skogafoss

The Skógafoss is a 60 meter high and 25-meter wide waterfall in the south-west of Iceland. You can view this waterfall from the ground, but also from the top. There is a walking path up to the waterfall. In addition, there is a camping site a 2-minute walk away, so you can visit the waterfall early in de morning before it will get crowded.

Waterfall #1: Kvernufoss

The Kvernufoss is a definitely a lesser-known waterfall in West Iceland, but our absolute number one. This is a special waterfall because you can stand behind it and feel the force of the water running down. Also, its environment looks like a scene from the Lord of the Rings (very photogenic!). And because this waterfall is less known, you can enjoy the experience in peace.
